I Killed John Lennon

Mark Chapman had always been a loner, someone who sought attention and wanted to be recognised. On the evening of 8th December 1980 he caught the attention of the world when he assassinated the former Beatle, John Lennon.

Lennon had made his home in New York City. With his wife Yoko Ono and his young son Sean, he’d set up home in the iconic Dakota building on the west side of Manhattan and had lived a quiet, domestic existence, away from the prying eyes of the world’s media. After an absence of some years Lennon had recently gone back to the studio and was coming home from a late night recording session when Chapman gunned him down.

I Killed John Lennon tells the story of that killing and the turbulent life of the killer through the eyes and testimony of Chapman himself. Using unique audio archive extracts from an interview conducted with Chapman by journalist Jack Jones, the documentary tells the story of a complex and tortured individual who saw the killing of an international celebrity like Lennon as a validation of his own self-worth.

Featuring new interviews from witnesses and commentators as well as archive news and footage, I Killed John Lennon is a compelling and hugely watchable documentary.
